What Is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 through October 15 every year — starting mid-September because five Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) celebrate their independence on September 15, with Mexico following on September 16.

For baseball, a sport where nearly 30% of MLB players are of Hispanic or Latino descent, this month is a natural fit. Teams across both MLB and MiLB go all-in with themed celebrations, cultural giveaways, alternate identity nights, and community events.

Here's everything happening in 2026.

Dodgers — Viva Los Dodgers: The Dodgers run their "Viva Los Dodgers" pregame celebration multiple times through the season, with events on June 21, July 12, August 16 and 23, and September 20. These include live music, cultural programming, and food vendors in the stadium plaza.

Giants — Fiesta Gigantes: San Francisco runs Fiesta Gigantes on nearly every Saturday home game from June through September — a recurring Latin music and culture celebration in the park.

D-backs — Hispanic Heritage Weekend: Arizona hosts a multi-day celebration August 22-23 presented by Estrella Jalisco.

MiLB Hispanic Heritage Celebrations

This is where it gets really interesting. MiLB teams don't just celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in September — many run Latin-themed events all summer through their Copa de la Diversión alternate identities.

What Is Copa de la Diversión?

Copa de la Diversión ("Fun Cup") is MiLB's league-wide initiative connecting teams with local Hispanic/Latino communities through alternate team identities. Teams rename themselves for specific games — often with Spanish-language names reflecting local culture:

Team Alternate Identity What It Means
Albuquerque Isotopes Mariachis de Nuevo México Traditional music culture
Akron RubberDucks Los Perros Calientes Hot dogs (yes, really)
Columbus Clippers Los Veleros de Columbus The Sailors
Hartford Yard Goats Los Chivos de Hartford The Goats
Harrisburg Senators Los Playeros de Harrisburg The Beach-Goers
Worcester Red Sox Los Wepas de Worcester Puerto Rican exclamation of joy
San Bernardino 66ers Pachuco Zoot suit culture
Gwinnett Stripers Xolos de Gwinnett Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican hairless dog)
South Bend Cubs Los Cabritos Maldichos The Cursed Little Goats
Sacramento River Cats Dorados de Sacramento The Golden Ones
Frisco RoughRiders Los Quesos The Cheeses (with lowriders)

Worcester's Country-by-Country Series

The Worcester Red Sox deserve a special mention. Their "Los Wepas de Worcester" identity runs a multi-game series where each game celebrates a different Latin American country or region:

  • July 8 — Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay
  • July 12 — Dominican Republic
  • August 14 — Puerto Rico
  • August 27 — Brazil
  • September 15 — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua

This is community engagement done right — not a one-night checkbox but a season-long celebration that rotates through the diverse Hispanic communities in Central Massachusetts.

What to Look For

If you're attending any of these events, here's what to expect:

Pregame festivals: Many teams host pregame plazas with live music (mariachi, banda, salsa), traditional food vendors, dancing, and cultural displays. These typically start 2 hours before first pitch and are free with a game ticket.

Alternate jerseys: Copa de la Diversión teams wear their alternate-identity jerseys during these games. Some are available as giveaways, others are auctioned post-game for charity.

Limited giveaways: Items like the Lowrider Bobbleheads (Albuquerque), Beach Towel (Harrisburg), and Fan Flag (Wilmington) are typically first-come, first-served for the first 1,000-3,000 fans.

Postgame concerts & fireworks: Several teams pair heritage nights with Latin music acts and fireworks shows — Buffalo, Spokane, Reno, and Albuquerque all have these scheduled.
